Reusable bowl covers are a great way to reduce plastic wrap use and add character to your kitchen! They’re especially handy for covering bowls while cooking or baking, and they’re a great beginner-friendly sewing project.
Supplies
Fabric -- 2 pieces per cover if you want reversibility
Matching Thread
Elastic — 1/4 inch works greats for this project
Parchment Paper -- (regular paper also works fine). You only need this if if you are making a pattern to reuse.
Pinking Shears (optional)
Fabric Marker
Basic Sewing Supplies
Sewing Machine
Iron
Fabric Scissors
Pins or clips
Fabric Tape Measure
Instructions
STEP 1: Create or Trace Your Pattern
Option A: Create a reusable pattern by tracing the bowl onto parchment paper, then add a 2-inch border around the traced circle.
Option B: Trace directly onto your fabric around your bowl, then add a 2-inch margin around it.
STEP 2: Cut Fabric Pieces
Pin your fabric to the pattern (or, if you traced directly onto the fabric, pin your fabric pieces together).
Cut out both fabric pieces, then pin them with the right sides together.
STEP 3: Sew Fabric Pieces Together
Sew around the edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-inch gap to turn the fabric.
Trim the edges for a clean finish. Pinking shears help to reduce fraying.
STEP 4: Turn the fabric
Turn the fabric right side out through the gap, then use a pointed object to smooth out the seams. Press flat with your iron.
STEP 5: Measure and Cut Elastic
Measure the diameter of the bowl, subtract 3 inches, and cut your elastic to that length.
**The mouth of my jar measured 10.5 inches, so I cut my elastic at 7.5"
STEP 6: Sew the Elastic Casing
Sew around the edge again with a 1-inch seam allowance to create the elastic casing. Sew the entire circle this time (no gaps).
STEP 7: Insert and Secure the Elastic
Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and feed it through the casing.
Overlap the elastic ends by half an inch and sew them together.
STEP 8: Close the Gap
Adjust the elastic evenly around the cover, then sew the 2-inch gap closed, either by hand or with your sewing machine.
And that’s it! You’ve made a cute, eco-friendly bowl cover. Enjoy reducing plastic waste with this reusable kitchen essential!
Notes
Before using any fabric, I always wash, dry, and iron. This helps get accurate sizing when measuring and generally makes fabric easier to work with. Some fabrics will also shrink in the wash, so this step helps avoid large amounts of shrinkage when you wash your final product.
