How to Sew Chubby Knot Bows (Sewing Machine & Serger Tutorial)

YouTube video tutorial linked below.

Supplies

  • Fabric (2)

  • Matching Thread

  • Clip or headband of your choice

  • Wax Paper or Regular Paper (if you want to make a pattern)

Basic Sewing Supplies

  • Sewing Machine

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Pins or clips

  • Ruler

  • Cutting Mat

Instructions

Step 1: Cut your fabric.

The best fabric for this project is a stretchy, lightweight knit. You can use woven fabric, but it tends to make bows that aren't as full. Woven fabric is also a little more tedious to tie together into the knot in the end, but not impossible.

Cut 2 fabric pieces 6"x7.25" (Remember to cut the longer edge (7.25") on the fabric edge with the most stretch. This makes it easier to tie your knot at the end of the project.)

You can jump right in and cut your fabric to size or make a pattern first. A pattern is great if you want to make more than one set.

Step 2: Fold the fabric right sides together & pin.

You don't have to pin in all of the spots that I did below -- it's just the easiest way for me to show where to start and stop. Don't forget to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam (if using sewing machine).

Step 3: Sew at 1/4 inch seam allowance (remembering to leave a gap for turning).

You can use a sewing machine or serger for this step. I have examples of each below.

Step 4: Turn the fabric right sides out & push out the corners.

Step 5: Fold the fabric lengthwise & tie into a knot.

Fold each of the pieces in half lengthwise (hotdog style) & tie into a knot.

If you are attaching to a nylon headband, you need to tie the knot around the headband.

If making clips, tie your knot first, and then insert the clip into the back of the bow.

You can watch the video linked below to see how I tied the knot if you have trouble with this step.
